University Instructors Is Now UI: Unlimited Instruction

After thirty years, University Instructors is becoming UI: Unlimited Instruction. Here is the story of how we got here, and why we think now is the perfect time for a new name.

UI started as a connection point for universities to bring tutoring to local students. It was simple, in 1994 we saw the need to bring capable college students into K–12 classrooms and give schools the extra instructional help they needed. That is how University Instructors got its name, and for a young organization built on connecting undergraduates with schools, it fit perfectly.

That was thirty-two years ago. Over the years, schools have changed and so did we. What began as a way to place college students and create tutoring programs grew, one district request at a time, into something much bigger. Districts didn't only need tutors. They needed help filling hard-to-staff roles, tutoring that actually moved student learning, special education and related services, and enrichment programs that reached further than any single classroom. So we built those things, because we were listening to our partners' needs. Today UI, proudly, delivers more than one million instructional hours a year across staffing, tutoring, special education, and enrichment, in districts all over the country.

Why University Instructors is becoming UI: Unlimited Instruction

As we have grown so have the challenges facing districts. School systems today are navigating ongoing educator shortages, the long work of learning recovery post COVID, and increasing special education needs. "University Instructors" described where we started and who we supported, but it no longer describes what districts actually lean on us for and the breadth of work we do with partners.

So we did something we had been circling for a while. We gave the work a name that finally matches it: UI: Unlimited Instruction.

Our work today extends far beyond what the name University Instructors originally represented. Dr. James Lane, CEO of University Instructors and former Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Commonwealth of Virginia, put it plainly:

"We partner with K–12 districts across staffing, tutoring, special education, and coaching, and our name should reflect that broader impact. While the name is changing, the people, programs, and commitment our district partners rely on remain the same, and we look forward to building on that foundation with unlimited potential for growth and impact."

While our name has evolved, our commitment remains the same

That last part matters most. The UI you know is still here. Same team, same programs, same people. The letters you have trusted for three decades stay right where they have always been, at the center of everything. What is new is what they stand for.

So why "Unlimited"? Because we believe every district deserves unlimited possibilities for solving its instructional challenges. When a classroom sits without the right teacher, a student can lose ground for a year. When the right, consistent support shows up instead, students gain, and the research on what works keeps pointing to the same thing: trained people, in person, making a measurable difference. Our job is to make more of that possible, without limits.

Unlimited Instruction. Unlimited Impact.

The promise behind what our name stands for doesn’t change. For thirty years, that promise has been simple: every student deserves access to high-quality instruction, delivered by exceptional people.
